High Reactivity Carbon Mixture (HRCM): A Unique Nano-Carbon Sorbent of the XXI century
HRCM is a new nano-carbon material that is designed to revolutionize the business of water purification, air pollution control and environmental cleanup (oil spills, chemical contamination, etc.) HRCM is manufactured by a unique method of cold autocatalytic decomposition of graphite, which results in a formation of carbon-based nano-material with unprecedented properties and abilities.
HRCM is a dark grey very lightweight powder that has an extremely large specific surface area (2,500 m2 per 1 gram of HRCM). The surface of this material consists of atomic layers of cyclic carbon (graphenes) with damaged molecular bonds. HRCM also contains about 20% of tubular nano-carbon structures that are 50,000 times thinner than a human hair. HRCM is a chemically inert substance, electro conductive, hydrophobic (limiting wetting angle is more than 90 degrees), stable in corrosive environments and ecologically clean. HRCM consists of 99.4% pure carbon materials with a bulk density of 0.01-0.001 g/cm3 (depending on the manufacturing method).

The main characteristics of HRCM are shown below in Table 1.

Table 1

Specific weight 0.01—0.001 g/cm3 depending on the manufacturing method
Specific surface area 2,500 m2/g
Application temperature range -60 to + 3,000 °C
Mass ratio of adsorbed liquid hydrocarbons Up to 1:80 depending on the type
Mass ration of adsorbed gas phase hydrocarbons Up to 1:40 depending on the type
Ratio of regeneration the adsorbed material Up to 98%

As a sorbent and water filtration agent HRCM exceeds the capabilities of all known water purification systems. After a single filtration the opacity decreases by a factor of 25-60 and the amount of suspended particles drops by a factor of 10-30. The filtration system consistently removes sulphates, sulphides, fluorides, chlorides, nitrites, iron, zinc, copper, aluminum, manganese, lead, arsenic, molybdenum and free chlorine. HRCM can purify hot water and even steam.

HRCM demonstrates a very important and unique property: after passing through the layer of HRCM 10-15 cm thick the biochemical oxygen demand of the water decreases by a factor of 2. This ability allows HRCM to successfully clean water from natural sources (rivers, lakes and swamps) and make it drinkable.

HRCM is able to remove microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) from water during the filtration process. Bacteria and viruses always attach themselves to tiny particles suspended in the water. Since HRCM effectively captures even the smallest suspended particles, the bacteria and viruses are also captured and trapped in the volume of HRCM. To prevent the reproduction of microorganisms inside HRCM volume HRCM surface can be coated with nano-size particles of silver and iodine.
